Concerned by the idea of humanity's remains floating around in space and clogging up our solar system? Don't worry, we'll still be around! We've discovered a way to preserve human DNA remains in liquid nitrogen so they can survive millions of years, and it's all thanks to this PDF. Follow these instructions to freeze your cells and avoid the possibility of entombment inside another planet or asteroid that took billions of years to come into being. You'll survive long after science has forgotten how humanity came about, but you won't forget this. As with most projects, it's best to start by assembling all of the materials you'll need. A few essential components include: container for your cells, liquid nitrogen, and food coloring. The container is necessary to keep out oxygen and UV light; the less exposure your DNA has to these factors (which can alter DNA and its structure) the better! You may use any glass or plastic container with a tight fitting lid; we recommend using a size that can house at least 5ml of cells/DNA – be cautious about choosing one that is too big as this may make it difficult to transport and store your sample. Using a lab-grade vacuum pump, you'll be able to depressurize the container. Once it reaches 1/10th of its original volume, pour in 2mL of liquid nitrogen while mixing in the food coloring. Next, make sure to seal your container very well, and ensure that you carry it with you at all times when at work or school. This is important because if oxygen inside your container is allowed to mix with the nitrogen, it will begin to break down your DNA. As soon as you get back, transfer all of the contents into a freezer safe bag or box then take it straight to your home laboratory for storage. The process of freezing cells is incredibly swift, but it requires a little bit of patience. If you're lucky, it only takes about 15 minutes to freeze the sample. If not, leave the container alone for another 3 hours and check on it again. Once you're satisfied that everything is below -150 °C (don't trust your thermometer!), remove the cells from their container with tweezers, then place them into a freezer-safe bag or box. This will protect them from oxygen exposure and help to keep them preserved for as long as possible. Finally, much like your DNA sample, transport your cells immediately to your home laboratory where they will remain for the rest of time. To thaw out cells, simply take them out of their container, put them in room temperature water (in a bowl or glass) and leave them there for about 20 minutes. You'll see your cells floating around right before your eyes! If you doubt the cooling process was effective in preserving the DNA structure, you may always run an experiment by trying to take DNA out of water vs. cfa1e77820
