Aksharaya is a 1987 Hindi language Indian feature film directed by Shyam Benegal and produced by N. K. Singh. It is based on the novel A Horse and Two Goats (1961) by Bengali author Mahasweta Devi, who also wrote the screenplay for this film. It was filmed in Benegal's home town, Bhilai in Durg district, Chhattisgarh with many local actors as extras and technicians... Shyam Benegal ... Aksharaya Kishore Kumar ... Ghasidas Chatterji Dilip Kumar ... Bhakta Gopi Lata Mangeshkar ... Mrs. Shukla "Aksharaya" premiered in 1987 at the 42nd International Film Festival of India in the Indian Panorama section. This film contains some scenes that are based on true events that happened in Aksharaya village of Durg district of current Chhattisgarh state of India...after some time, this film is released in various parts of India under title "Aksharaya". For an example, in 1985, a man named Ghasidas Chatterji (played by Kishore Kumar in this movie), who was a Mr. Clean type of person and social reformer / fighter, died after his wife and daughter-in-law poisoned him. The real Ghasidas Chatterji lived in Aksharaya village and was the headmaster of the school there. When Shyam Benegal read ‘A Horse and Two Goats’ he knew it would make an excellent film. The story of Bhakta Gopi has many references to Benegal's childhood memories of growing up in the country. He was inspired by Mahasweta's understanding of India's social structure and the system of castes. Shyam also found the central character of Ghasidas, projected on Kishore Kumar to be inspired by himself. Benegal sought out the help of Mahasweta Devi, then living in Calcutta, and together they made 'Aksharaya' in ten weeks. ‘Aksharaya’ was Shyam Benegal’s love letter not only to his own home state (he grew up in Durg), but also to an idea: that cinema has a purpose beyond entertainment because it can shape people's lives. The film was India's official entry to the Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film but did not make the final shortlist. It is an inspirational story of a school teacher who leads a social revolution in his village without getting involved in politics. He wants his fellow villagers to change the way they think and act. He teaches them to read and write, he teaches them about Gandhian non-violence and helps set up a school for children of scavengers, so that they can get an education. But he does all this without preaching too much. cfa1e77820
